[LET'S PLAY] DIGIMON STORY CYBER SLEUTH REVIEW [PSVITA]
About
To celebrate 15th years of Digimon Adventure first run on TV project, Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth has been made for everyone who had watched Digimon series. As a part of sweetheart nostalgia, the childhood recall is followed by the release of Digimon 02 continuation, Digimon Adventure Tri, and any other products related (tamagotchi digivice, pendant digivice, Megahouse & SHF Figure, and plushie). The game is published by Bandai Namco Games and developed by Media.Vision.
Suzuhito Yasuda (Durarara!!, Devil Survivor) once again has been chosen as the character designer while the monster design is being trusted to Oh, Great! (Air Gear). Isn't it great? Both of spin-off predecessors, Digimon World Re:Digitize and Digimon World Re:Digitize: Decode, was bringing the 'Digimon World' brand but this time they were going back to reuse the 'Digimon Story' brand that once popular in Nintendo DS. Still, they rely all the character design games to Suzuhito Yasuda which gives so damn good impact for the character.
Ever since I looked this scene in trailer, I know this will be awesome. |

Gameplay
You are free to choose either a cool boy defaultly named Aiba Takumi or a cute girl named Aiba Ami, the person with [AIOBA] as alias. Of course you can change the name. After collecting information you will meet ero-kawaii Shiramine Nokia and moody handsome Sanada Arata a.k.a. [Akkino] and [BlueBox] in designated place. After several talks you will get a chance to choose a starter Digimon partner of 3 choice. やたら可愛い [Abundantly cute Digimon] is Terriermon, いい ニオイ [The Digimon with good smell] is Palmon, and メカメカ [The geary Digimon] is Hagurumon.
After choosing your Digimon you will run into クリサリモン (Chrysalimon). This Digimon is so nice that let you and your newly acquaintances called Yugo, the leader of Zaxon, to go on handicap match and test the battle system. If you has played Digimon Story series on Nintendo DS before (Digimon World DS, Dusk and Dawn in US) the system isn't much different. Just hold the button direction to choose any control command you intend. Even the turn list is same.
Additionally, the menu interface is also similar with the previous game as well as the game feature with some new improvement added. You can either evolve, devolve, or converting your Digimon scanning in Digi-Lab and sorting them in and out in in Digi-Bank. As one of regular trait in Digimon Story series, Digi-Farm is presented again with better appearance more than in NDS. Nurture your Digimon by feeding them regularly to develop and deepen your bond with them. Set your digimon leader to lead and train others. You also can instruct them to do either 'Special Training', 'Development', or 'Investigate'.
By doing 'Special Training' when your digimon got their level up they will have their stats and parameters increasing. Producing items, equipment, and farm goods is useful for more efficient Special Training. You can do it in 'Development'. Finally as the part of 'Cyber Sleuth' tagline, you are able to use detective skill in 'Investigation' by discovering subquest and information regarding the hacker groups. They even pay a great attention to small details like unlock the padlock in dialogue to track intel based on words to make things interesting.
Scan, nurture, train. There are (more or less) 240 Digimon you can acquire. Take a stroll with your Digimon through Tokyo neighborhood while helping to solve cases. Build your strongest digimon, beat others, and save the day. Want to beat your friends? Beat them in Coliseum via network play and set your rank to top-notch.
Masafumi Takada is responsible in performing nice soundtrack in game. Some of it really catch the urban atmosphere and quite hardboiled that in line with Suzuhito Yasuda freshly new-fashioned design and 'Sleuth' theme. Takada-sensei big name could be tracked in his previous work such as Danganronpa and No More Heroes. Last, we like how the environment is rendered especially when in city. The a-bit-future Tokyo seems cozy and some place is pretty much same with the real one.
The game is almost flawless. The only flaw is the unvarying camera angle. We don't hate the fact it's only released in Japanese. But we think it's better to have an English release in addition to good sales. We also can't be happier to know Mirei Mikagura and Rina Shinomiya is on board once again. Have a good play!

Visual and Audio
We could really say, that duo Suzuhito Yasuda and Oh! Great design really catch our eyes. The way Yasuda-sensei draws always ended up in hot babes and cool guy. Even the old man design is awesome in some way. Each of the character has unique characteristic and it could be seen a bit in just a glimpse by looking at their stand demeanor. In other hand, Oh! Great digimon design is really looks terrifying for the gruesome digimon while the Royal Knights looks mighty and gallant yet the low-level digimon still preserved their cute appearance. Oh! Great-sensei can capture each of their strong charm and present it well by applying some contrast, shadow, and firm line not to mention their digimon stand demeanor is also awesome. All of those is well rendered thanks to Vita hardware capability.

Nice review to me the game is a 9/10, one of my favorite ps games.
ReplyDeleteThanks, man. The game would be flawless if they had English version of it. But after all the petition Bandai Namco got, they only give us thanks.
