[LATE REVIEW] SAINT SEIYA - LEGEND OF SANCTUARY

The legend reborn...

Those who spent their childhood or their teenage at lately 80's or early 90's must be remembered one of their hero-wanna-be, Saint Seiya. Based on super popular manga that has been serialized on 'Weekly Shonen Jump' from 1985 to 1990, this series captivated  many youngsters and grown-up at that time because of its story. Combined Greek myth, dramatical fighting and endless struggle from their protagonist, this series was concluded as one of big anime phenomenon.

And lately, the story has been going to big screen. The 3G movie adaptation take the Sanctuary Battle arc. Here is the trailer of movie. Credit goes to uploader. So, let's begin the appraisal.

Story

The beginning was great. It started with Sagitarius Aiolos being chased by unknown. After get strucked by attack, he fell down to earth. At that time, Mitsumasa Kido explored Himalayan region cave and found him. Being in agony and unable to survive, Aiolos inherit a golden egg to Mitsumasa.

A handsome men inherit his golden egg. Don't let any weird ideas come into your mind.

The egg was opened and a pretty girl baby appeared. In spite of confused and trapped in gallant mystery, Mitsumasa decided to raise the baby. The story jumps away 16 years later. At the best blossom adolescent of pretty girl growing, the girl must face a reality that her very own life is threatened because she was being accused as fake Athena, the goddess who protect Sanctuary with her power. The truth is, she is real Athena. And of course, the killer was ordered to kill the real one to cover up the propaganda. Luckily, white-horse guy and his companion is coming at the right time to save the girl, Saori Kido. Yes, he was not really riding a white horse. but he took pegasus form as his Cloth armor.

Seiya, Shiryu, Hyoga, Shun, the name of boys who save Saori, was an orphanage that has been trained all the time just to carry one mission, protect Saori Kido, the real Athena, and go to Sanctuary to reveal the truth. Wait, it's two. By now, they could use Cosmos as Silver Saint. By the power of, in sequence,  Pegasus, Dragon, Cygnus, Andromeda, and one character that coming later like in Ranger (Super Sentai in Japan) series, the Silver Saint joint forces to pass through Gold Saint, the guardian of Temple, in order to meet the Pope, the one who want to eliminate the real Athena badly. Pretty fishy, right?

The concept is just the same as the original manga source. The concept of Athena that is the Goddess of Wisdom and Justice but at the same time she was also entitled as the Goddess of War and Victory. While it seems so contradical, actually she hates war. But, naturally mankind always raged to war. Nevertheless, the war that she supports is the kind of defend, not conquest. That's why she doesn't allow excessive weapon usage to his Saint, her protector. So she create Cloth, powerful mighty armor, that allow its user to boost Cosmos, inner spiritual power that lies in every creature. The Silver Saints take mythical creature or space constellation as their base of Cloth, while the Gold Saints take 12 zodiacs from Greek constellation.

The base of story is well explained and quickly easy to catch up. The plot was rather unacceptable for the fan that faithfully follows the manga and/or anime. It is barely impossible to explain as the original chapter in manga in just full-legth 93 minutes movie. In my opinion, it is well adapted to sum up every significant material. Good job! They also put a lot of comedy while it's not in battle time. I found it weird, but as the time goes, I enjoyed it. The finishing quite usual. But, even a good things have to finish by good conclusion, right?

Visual

There is a time when the animation is not really detailed, e.g. when the character see their hand. There is so many CG movie Japanese animation lately and you may realize the distinction is very clear between the Western (i.e. Disney Pixar, Universal, etc.) and the Japanese. When you used to accept beautifully animated Final Fantasy as a standard, you may see Saint Seiya movie, different. The movement of character quite similar to Disney. You know, shocked, weird, confused, or shaking movement. I see they do it on purpose as they also don't make the character beauty or handsomeness not on maximum level as people do in Final Fantasy. It's really good to not float off in mainstream. They successfully create their uniqueness. Though it's not very beautiful, personally I like Saori expression when she is confused. It's kind of cute. Does my fetish change to confused girl now?

The armor is really different to their predecessors. It's really great on detail. They can change form to helmet mode that covering up entire face except eyes. It's also applied in Gold Saint though a few cover up entire face with no exception. Not to mention their Cloth transformation process also bloody awesome. Their battle scene quite follow trend nowadays. Some slow motion and expression zoom combined with great detail and effect will satisfy your eyes. The setting amazes me. The color of sky, statue, and the temples is elegant. I don't have any objection in the design character. They perfectly fit in all its way. I am still confused. Is that Scorpio Milo woman? The US translated official site tells she is man. But her voice and body is truly a magnificent woman.

"What? I'm a trap?"

Sound

BGM is usual. You can find it similar on another bravery-themed movies. It's not bad, though. Closing song was great. It's so mellow and delicate. It can't be described as sad song, but in reverse it represents an endless struggle. It's very concordant with the movie. Well done. Wait, what about  legendary song Pegasus Fantasy as people had embraced deep in their heart all the time? Well, as I am aware, I didn't hear anything about this. It may be played after the Hero (Yoshiki Classical Version) ft. Katie Fitzgerald closing song. But, it's possibly not. For those who wonder the song, here is the little teaser.

Verdict

Verdict time! It's not that bad. Rather than misdoubt my formula, I'd prefer to recommend you to judge it by yourselves. Watch it while it's still available on local cinemas.
