[REVIEW] STAND BY ME DORAEMON

       [REVIEW] STAND BY ME DORAEMON

Commemorating 80 years of Fujiko F. Fujio births, Stand by Me Doraemon was made. As one of Fujiko F. Fujio masterpiece, Doraemon is well known and always be accepted by many people from different age range. No matter how old you are right now, you were definitely passed through times and growing old with Doraemon. You can watch the trailer here. Prepare your heart.

STORY

For every true fan of Doraemon, they definitely know the story isn't really considered as new. Yeah, even the trailer says "The greatest episode compiled".  The plot combines "All the Way From the Country of the Future", "Romance in Snowy Mountain", "Nobita's the Night Before a Wedding" and "Goodbye, Doraemon..." But they can arrange this neatly as single unity as if its a new one.

The story is faithfully following the manga. Sewashi as a great grandchild of Nobita comes from the future to bring Doraemon to his great grandfather by the hope to change a whole family's fate. Doraemon is programmed by Sewashi to accomplish one mission, makes Nobita really happy and grateful for his life so he declares his happiness as a proof.

Caused by Nobita lackness in every aspect of life skill (actually it's not every aspect if you read the whole manga), he will suffer hardships for his entire life, even in future. Sewashi as his 4th descendants will inherit his suffers. He tells his great grandfather that he will marry Jaiko, Giant's sister. Trying to change the future, Nobita forces himself to change so that he can marry Shizuka, one of his beautiful classmates.

Shizuka is always the best ideal wife to be no matter where in times we lived

At the beginning it's really hard for Nobita to be better, but with the help of Doraemon everything's getting easier. But it's only happened in beginning, since Nobita always ended up misuse Doraemon's future gadget. As example, to strikes back Suneo, a cocky wealth boy, and Giant, a big guy that always using force to make everything as he wants or impress Shizuka. After a series of event, Doraemon makes Nobita realizes that he needs to strive for Shizuka's love and not too dependent by Doraemon to change his behavior and his choice of life. One thing that Nobita doesn't realize, if Nobita successfully change his future and becoming happy, Doraemon as his best friend at the most times will go back to future because Nobita no longer needs his help...

The story is well arranged. The different chapter smoothly blends as one plot like no boundaries. Unlike the previous movie that adapting the Adventure stories, this movie breaks out the fashion from the fighting bad guy and teaming up with Suneo, Giant, and Shizuka, to daily life story of Nobita. This time, Nobita's stories is being chosen as main viewpoint and other character as supporting role that shapes Nobita character as time goes by. The decision to choose those 4 stories as stated above as main plot is right at the point while we know that Doraemon manga itself is jut combination of short stories, not long run stories with many conflicts. It may not summarize 45 volume of tankoubon but it takes a significant stories that affecting Nobita's future as it could be considered as main stories of Nobita.

Like any other movies that presents a set of short footage in half-midway of stories before the story takes its peak, a combination of short footage took from various standalone chapter in manga presents Doraemon's future gadget signature like Takecopter, Dokodemo Doa (Anywhere Door), Anki Pan, Time Furoshiki  (Time Kerchief), Time Machine, Kisekae Camera (Dress-up Camera), Gulliver Tunnel, Doubutsu Umare Kawari Tamago (Animal Transformation Egg), and many more. Its good to see those kids play happily with the gadgets. It just brings back the childhood memories.

The movie doubly emphasizes the emotion from the original manga while it's also really funny at the same time. Whether you're laughing for Nobita sloppiness or moved by Nobita choices, it doesn't matter because both of it will burst your tears out. This movie really release all of Doraemon potential so far. We could easily moved not only because of the quality of the story, but also we had been actually connected with Doraemon since a long times.

VISUAL

Stand by Me Doraemon is the first Doraemon movie ever that was made by full 3DCG. It really brings a whole new experience for both new fan and the old one. By such quantum leap of shape-shifting from 2D to 3D, the effect of Doraemon's future gadget really looks more sophisticated and more futuristic. The details of effect and animation made audience almost feel what it would be like when they maneuvered flying with Takecopter for the first time as Nobita did. The time machine looks like it is real thing compared to the old anime. It is really wonderful  that Fujiko F. Fujio could invite those idea at past. Things getting great since the future gadget looks really new-fashioned without leaving its originality.

Talking about the setting, it looks more natural. At some point it looks great but some times it's just usual. Oh, the setting of time warp zone is really cool. Japan in future looks awesome with every sponsor billboard remains hanging. There was only slight change in Nobita's room and every character just looks bigger than their setting or maybe it's otherwise. Nobita's Room, Nobi Residence, and the field looks a little bit tiny compared to size of the character.

I like the way of character new looks. Somehow, it reminds me to UP from Disney Pixar. Nobita's Dad is getting taller that in line with his mom. The movement animation takes the most noteworthy that makes this movie emotionally alive. When the design looks a bit realistic, character reaction is very comical. It's very classic. It's the second best part in this movie after the choice of story.

SOUND

It's the third element that let your emotion streams down inside. The story combined with character expression and BGM really makes you blend into the movie. Every phase in the movie delivered by a right BGM. The BGM as flawless as the ending song, Himawari no Yakusoku by Motohiro Hata. Perfect!

CONCLUSION

If you have been living alongside Doraemon for years, you have to watch this movie. It means all of you. You have to stand by close to Doraemon as Doraemon do supports Nobita.

We help ourselves to get our souvenir. The next image is the statue that displayed for guest to commemorate movie debut.
